Course Content
Module 1: Introduction to Nutrition-Sensitive and Nutrition-Resilient Programming Foundations of Nutrition-Sensitive Programming (NSP) Definition, objectives, and principles of NSP. Role in addressing malnutrition, food insecurity, and health outcomes. Nutrition Resilience Concepts Understanding resilience frameworks: individual, household, and community levels. Indicators for nutrition resilience and program performance. Global and National Context Alignment with SDGs, national nutrition policies, and international guidelines. Activity: Case study discussion analyzing successful nutrition-sensitive and resilience programs, identifying lessons learned and best practices.
Module 2: Food Security and Nutritional Assessment Household and Community Food Security Assessment Tools for measuring food access, availability, and utilization. Identifying vulnerable groups: women, children, elderly, and displaced populations. Nutritional Status Assessment Anthropometric measures: weight-for-age, height-for-age, BMI, mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC). Dietary diversity scores, micronutrient assessments, and food consumption indicators. Interpreting Data for Program Design Linking assessment results to intervention planning. Workshop: Simulate nutritional assessments using sample data, analyze findings, and identify priority needs.
Module 3: Designing Nutrition-Sensitive Interventions Integrating Nutrition Across Sectors Agriculture: biofortification, home gardens, and crop diversification. Health: immunization, micronutrient supplementation, maternal-child health services. Education: school feeding programs, nutrition education. Social protection: cash transfers, food vouchers, safety nets. Program Planning and Indicator Development Setting SMART objectives and measurable outcomes. Developing process, output, and impact indicators for nutrition programs. Exercise: Draft a nutrition-sensitive intervention plan, including sector integration, objectives, and key indicators.
Module 4: Nutrition Resilience Programming Strengthening Household and Community Resilience Identifying shocks and stressors (climate events, economic crises, conflict). Designing interventions to mitigate impact on nutrition and food security. Resilience Assessment Tools Community vulnerability assessments, coping strategy indexes, and resilience scoring. Adaptive and Sustainable Strategies Promoting local solutions, resource diversification, and community empowerment. Module 5: Behaviour Change Communication (BCC) for Nutrition Designing Effective Nutrition Messages Culturally appropriate and actionable messages. Using health behaviour theories to inform message development. Communication Channels and Techniques Interpersonal: counseling, peer education. Community-based: workshops, drama, local media. Digital: SMS, social media campaigns, radio programs. Monitoring Communication Effectiveness Evaluating reach, engagement, and behaviour change outcomes. Simulation: Role-play nutrition counseling sessions and community mobilization activities using tailored BCC strategies.
Module 6: Program Planning, Management, and Resource Mobilization Strategic Planning for Nutrition Programs Setting program goals, objectives, and milestones. Aligning activities with local needs and policy frameworks. Budgeting and Resource Allocation Estimating costs, identifying funding sources, and optimizing resources. Donor Engagement and Proposal Development Writing program proposals and securing sustainable funding. Exercise: Create a comprehensive nutrition program plan with budget, resource mapping, and donor strategy.
Module 7: Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) MEL Frameworks for Nutrition Programs Designing logic models and results frameworks. Selecting indicators for outputs, outcomes, and impact. Data Collection and Analysis Quantitative: surveys, anthropometric data, dietary assessments. Qualitative: focus groups, key informant interviews, community feedback. Reporting and Decision-Making Translating findings into actionable recommendations for program improvement. Workshop: Develop a full MEL plan for a nutrition-sensitive or resilience program, including indicators, data collection tools, and reporting templates. Module 8: Policy and Advocacy for Nutrition Programs Understanding Policy Environment National nutrition strategies, health policies, and international guidelines. Aligning program objectives with policy priorities. Advocacy Techniques Engaging government, NGOs, and community stakeholders. Developing policy briefs, presentations, and advocacy campaigns. Module 9: Gender, Equity, and Inclusion in Nutrition Programming Integrating Gender in Nutrition Programs Assessing gender dynamics and roles in food security and nutrition outcomes. Designing interventions that promote equitable participation. Inclusion of Vulnerable Groups Addressing the needs of marginalized populations (children, women, elderly, refugees).
